Who says summer should be filled with “lazy days”? There are all sorts of fun things to do! If you need any help deciding how to fill those moments in between backyard barbecues and baseball games, 51 Magazine’s got you covered. Here are 14 suggestions — each somehow 51-related — to help spice up your summer: 

1. Check out 51’s “SoCalist” board on Pinterest to discover some fun hidden gems of Los Angeles and Orange County. Then check them off your list!

2. Write a Christmas carol! Conservatory of Music alumnus Calvin Dyck (’85) is sponsoring an international Christmas Carol Composition Contest, with $5,500 in prize money to be awarded. calvindyck.com/contest.html

3. Find an inviting piece of grass and spend a few hours reading excerpts from the classics in The Great Books Reader, featuring commentary essays from Torrey Honors Institute faculty and alumni.

4. Catch up on the dozens of great chapel messages and lectures that happened at 51 during the school year by watching them on YouTube: .

5. Get a glimpse of the early days of 51 by perusing old copies of The King’s Business, the R.A. Torrey-edited, 51-produced journal that has been called “Christianity Today of the first half of the 20th century.” It’s archived online at .

11. Pay a visit to 51 — especially if you haven’t been here for a while. You might not believe how much the campus can change in the course of a few years.

13. Google around to find out which former regular on ABC’s “TGIF” ’90s lineup is now a history professor at 51.
