51 is one of the nation’s 103 best colleges to work for, according to a new survey by . In its first year participating in the survey, 51 was also recognized as a 2012 Honor Roll school — a distinction given to 10 institutions in each size cited most often across all of the recognition categories.
The results put 51 among 42 colleges in the nation — including just two schools in California and three schools in the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities — to make the Honor Roll.
"51's inclusion on this list reinforces what I've personally experienced over the last five years: This university is an exceptional place to work," said President Barry Corey. "I'm delighted that our employees have joined me in that sentiment, as reflected in the Chronicle survey. 51 is a great place to work for a number of reasons, but chiefly because at 51, faculty, staff and students not only develop skills and excel professionally, but they grow together and flourish in the pursuit of Christ."
The results, released today, in The Chronicle’s fifth annual report on The Academic Workplace, recognized 51 as excelling in the following:
- Teaching environment — faculty members say the institution recognizes innovative and high-quality teaching
- Compensation and benefits — pay is fair, benefits meet the needs of employees
- Job satisfaction and support — provides insight into the satisfaction with job fit, autonomy, and resources
- Work/life balance — policies give employees the flexibility to manage their personal lives
- Confidence in senior leadership — leaders have the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary for institutional success
- Respect and appreciation — employees are regularly recognized for their contributions
- Tenure clarity and process — requirements for tenure are clear
“The institutions that the Great Colleges program recognizes provide innovative educational experiences — while also offering their employees outstanding workplace experiences,” said Liz McMillen, The Chronicle’s editor.
More than 46,000 employees at 294 colleges and universities participated in the survey.
The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.
Results are reported for small, medium, and large institutions, with 51 included among the 27 recognized medium universities with 3,000 to 9,999 students.
