Overview

Become an ethical leader in public health through the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at 51蹤獲. The MPH program offers two concentrations global health and epidemiology.

With an MPH being the most widely recognized professional credential for leadership in public health, you'll be equipped for a career in health education, global health, environmental health, epidemiology and health services administration in both private organizations and government health departments.

As an MPH student at 51蹤獲, you'll apply the concepts and theories learned in the classroom to real-life health situations working with field preceptors and public health faculty advisors. You'll also be mentored by our experienced and caring faculty members, while building your professional network through internship opportunities in various communities and countries. 51蹤獲's Master of Public Health program will prepare you with integrative experiences, community-based practicums and clinically oriented research opportunities to become a well-rounded public health agent of change.

51蹤獲's public health master's program offers several key advantages:

  • Public health integrated with biblical perspective. Students will be taught from a Christian worldview in order to be compassionate agents of change, ethical decision-makers, health educators and champions of health equality.
  • Strong foundation. Students will receive rigorous instruction in all aspects of public health theory and practice in order to develop the skills needed to be life-long learners. In addition, students will integrate their education and practical experiences to effectively address public health challenges through research, publication, health promotion and service.
  • Practical, hands-on preparation. Students will be prepared for impactful service as health professionals with diverse field and research experiences, and work closely with public health faculty, field preceptors and community partners.
  • Flexible and accessible. The online format, with most classes lasting 7 weeks, will allow for flexibility for full-time professionals, and be accessible to students from any region of the U.S. or the world to receive an advanced public health degree.

Concentrations

  • Epidemiology
    Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of disease and injuries, and other health states in human populations. As the fundamental science of public health practice, students learn the skills needed to address public health problems. This concentration will prepare students to work in public health services as practitioners, researchers, administrators and consultants.
  • Global Health
    Global health is the study of health of populations in the global context. It is defined as the area of study, research and practice that prioritizes promoting health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. This concentration will prepare students to work in public health services as health educators, health specialists and researchers.

The MPH offers coursework in the five core areas of public health knowledge, which include 1) improving access to healthcare, 2) controlling infectious disease, 3) organizing community-based health initiatives, 4) promoting health screening and preventative measures among populations, and 5) playing a critical role in preparing for emergencies. Admissions & Deadlines

Education and GPA Requirements

  • You must have a bachelors degree from an accredited institution by the time you plan to start coursework at 51蹤獲, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Note: If you do not meet the degree or GPA requirements above, you may still be considered for admission. Please contact the Office of Graduate Admissions office at graduate.admissions@biola.edu. If you are an international student, contact grad.international@biola.edu.

Prerequisites

  • Completed prerequisite courses in the following areas:
    • One course in college-level human or general biology
    • One course in college algebra, statistics, pre-calculus or calculus

GRE Test Scores

  • The GRE is not required. For students who have taken the GRE can submit their scores as supporting material if you like them to be considered during the admission process

  • If English is not your first language, you are required to display your English proficiency before admittance into a 51蹤獲 graduate program. See English Proficiency in the application steps section below.

    • Submit all official transcripts from previous academic institutions.
      • Request official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
      • If enrolled at the time the application is filed, be sure to request transcripts of work finished to date and final transcripts upon completion of your course of study.
      • Transcripts will be considered official only when a) mailed directly from the institution to 51蹤獲, b) sent electronically through an approved vendor or c) physically delivered in an untampered envelope sealed by the institution. Final approval for admission is contingent on receiving an official transcript.

    Two Essays

    • Christian testimony
      • Prompt: Submit a 12 page essay explaining in your own words: 1) the circumstances surrounding your decision to become a follower of Christ, 2) the scriptural basis for your salvation, 3) your contribution to a local church community, and 4) describe how you display attributes of a mature Christian.
    • Statement of Purpose and Objectives
      • Prompt: 1) Briefly explain why you want to go into the field of public health? (500 words or less), 2) Describe your dream job in public health? (250 words or less)
    • Note: The essay prompts can be found in the online application.

    Resume or CV

    • A copy of your resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)

    English Proficiency (required for non-native English speakers)

    • Evidence of English proficiency is required for all students to support student success. Proficiency must be shown through one of the methods described below:
      • Minimum test score on a qualifying standardized test
        • TOEFL: minimum score of 90 iBT
        • IELTS: minimum score of 7.0
        • Duolingo: minimum score of 125
      • A degree (bachelors, masters or doctoral) issued by an institution where English is the medium of instruction.
        • Official written communication from the institution (Registrar, Controller of Examinations Office, or Undergraduate College)
        • Official degree statements or transcripts may be accepted given English is stated as the medium of instruction
        • Official catalog verification
        • Note: For universities from non-Anglophone countries, further language assessment may be required.
      • Completion of the English Language Scholars (ELS) with passing status on the ELS's final exit exam, which must be approved by the ELS Director in collaboration with the academic program committee. An updated TOEFL or IELTS score may be used at the end of a term to test directly into the graduate program for the following term.
      • Qualify for English Language Scholars (ELS), which allows students who do not meet the minimum TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores to still enroll in their graduate degree program. Students would be taking academic English courses concurrently with the graduate degree program courses. 
        • Students eligible for ELS will be assessed by the ELS Director to determine the total number of academic English courses to take while enrolled in their graduate program courses. The following are the scores needed to qualify for ELS: TOEFL iBT 81 / IELTS 6.5 / Duolingo 110124.
        • Note: Students must be admitted to the graduate program first to be considered for ELS.

    • Track your application status at any time. You do not have to complete the application in one sitting. You can complete a portion and finish at a later time. Your information will be saved. When you apply, to guarantee confidentiality, you will be asked to create a user name and a password, and will receive a personalized identification number. Track your application status by logging in to the .
    • Official documents presented for admission or evaluation become part of the students academic file and normally cannot be returned or copied for distribution.
