Overview

This course is intended for Christians who have endured traumatic events. If you would like to grow in your awareness of trauma and also learn how to guide others along their journeys with trauma, this course is also intended for you. Specifically, this course was designed in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the resulting traumatic experiences for Ukrainians.

The topics covered here include:

  • Engaging Scripture in healthy ways during suffering
  • Identifying combat common misconceptions about suffering and faith
  • Building an awareness of trauma and the common responses to traumatic events
  • Engaging in Psychological First Aid 
  • Leading others in processing trauma

Each lesson contains:

  • Videos that unpack the lesson's topic
  • Reflection questions to help you apply the skills covered in each lesson

James Hampson is the Director of Graduate Admissions at 51蹤獲. He graduated from 51蹤獲's Talbot School of Theology with a Master of Arts in New Testament in 2012. James has a passion for engaging God's Word. He works on projects in Biblical languages, linguistics, and the integration of scripture with suffering and traumatic experiences. James enjoys learning languages, engaging new cultures, and seeing God's work around the world. He resides in La Habra, California with his wife, Chrissy, and their four children.

David Wang, PhD is a licensed psychologist, pastor, and associate professor of psychology and pastoral counseling. He is the editor of the Journal of Psychology and Theology and serves on the editorial board for Spirituality in Clinical Practice. He is principle investigator of the Seminary Formation Assessment Project, a research program funded by the John Templeton Foundation conducting longitudinal empirical research on the human and spiritual formation of students enrolled in 18 North American Eastern Orthodox, Episcopal, Evangelical, Mainline Protestant and Roman Catholic seminaries. He is also co-principle investigator of the Trauma-Resilient Church Collective Program, a 5-year project funded by the Lilly Endowment mobilizing diverse local congregations to address both individual and systematic factors as they meet the spiritual and mental health needs of trauma survivors. Dr. Wang and his his wife Vivian live with their two daughters in Fullerton.
